Seven Song Spin, Secret Ingredient Edition

The songs on this week's playlist all have something in common. Can you hear it? (Answer at bottom.)

The entire playlist can be found here.

Contemplative Gospel: The greatness of Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," definitively recorded by Cannonball Adderley, kind of creeps up on you (at least it did me). When I could still play with a church band, we did this one a few times and it really landed.
Satélite Pop: "Las Flores" is a totally infectious '90s hit by Café Tacvba. Dig the melodicon solo at :57.

Feminist Funk: It's not just its fierce lyrics that deserve a wider listenership, it's also the ear-bending turn of its chorus conclusion, "No more funny games!" and the squeal of some kind of saxophone that make Lyn Collins's "You Can't Love Me If You Don't Respect Me" as worthy of your time as her iconic "Think (About It)."

Another Time, Another Place: My favorite tune among many by the Originálni Prazsky Synkopicky Orchestr, a self-consciously retro Czech Big Band I wrote about here, is this delightful bit of café/parlor music, "Stará, Natoc Gramofon" (which I believe translates as "old time record player").

Mercurial Mood: While we're in the Czech Republic, here's "Con moto" from
Janáček's peerless first quartet, nicknamed the Kreutzer. (I wrote about this and his other great quartet here.)

Carnival Barker Shtick: It is always a delight to hear, despite or perhaps because of its gassy length, the hilarious ur-Tom Waits scat "Step Right Up."

And to All a Good Night:
The Sherman Bros.' score for Mary Poppins is one of my favorites bar none, and the wit of the lullaby "Stay Awake" never fails to please.

Clue: They're all in the key of B-flat.
