Hey, Don't Cry Joe (& Maurice & Bruce & Tito)
A slapstick. |
In a previous life, when I had ProTools and more time to kill, I had some fun putting together mash-ups covers like this or this.
For this one I put together much of the content of two songs with, let's say, widely varying approaches to the end of a broken relationship—Jimi's "Hey Joe" and a minor Sinatra fave of mine, "Don't Cry Joe,"—and laid it over a 12-bar piano groove accompanied by loops from three different recordings: the slapstick that starts off Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, a howl from near the end of Springsteen's "Mr. State Trooper" (yes, it sounds like he's reacting to the whip of the Ravel), and the rock-solid percussion of Tito Puente's "Elegua Chango". Not my strongest vocal performance, but overall I'm pretty happy with the piece.
