A Whip Out of Cords
Christ Driving the Money-Changers Out of the Temple by Valentin de Boulogne |
The Scripture at yesterday's Greenpoint Reformed Church service was John 2: 13-22, the famous scene when Jesus turns out the money-changers in the temple, starts a bit of a riot, destroys property for a righteous cause—you know the one. Amazingly there is no hymn and few songs based on this famous scene (that I could find, at least), so I repurposed one of my favorite country gospel tunes, the Blue Sky Boys' "Come to the Saviour" (posted below) with partly new lyrics. I offer them here for free for your use, should you wish to use them.
Christ Cleanse the Temple
As we are weary and laden with sin
Christ, cleanse the temple today
You will receive us and heal us within
Christ, cleanse the temple today
Chorus:
Upturn the tables
And chase out the worst
The proud shall be humbled
The last shall be first
You paid the cost
That we might be set free
Christ, cleanse the temple today
For all our sins Jesus died to atone
Christ, cleanse the temple today
He’ll not forsake us nor leave us alone
Christ, cleanse the temple today
Chorus
Harken this message and heed the great call
Christ, cleansed the temple today
Trust in the Savior, surrender your all
Christ, cleansed the temple today
Chorus
