Music Diary, Vol. -73
For the rationale behind this mad effort, explanations here. The full series of Music Diary posts are here. The full playlist (minus the Blue Belt piece, which is only on SoundCloud) is above, also here.

LYRICS: Thomas Dolby, "Dissidents"
SONG: This ebullient orchestral pop affirmation by Lovett, backed by the Asheville Symphony and a choir playing a Van Dyke Parks arrangement, deserves consideration as a new national anthem.

LYRICS: Tom Waits, "Hell Broke Luce"
SONG: I don't think enough people have heard this amazing, quasi-psychedelic recording of Harry Nilsson singing a Sondheim outtake (since put back into Company). Knowing that Steve had this record made as a Christmas gift for Judy Prince is just icing.
LYRICS: Bing Crosby (Gorney/Harburg), "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?"
SONG: The Go-Go’s track I was most disappointed not to hear in the musical Head Over Heels was this fairly anguished minor-key song of reluctant emotional surrender. I mean, this one doesn’t just rock, it’s also inherently dramatic and act-able. UPDATE: I’ve been corrected on Twitter! Apparently it was in the Broadway version (which I saw but must not remember clearly), though it’s not on the cast album or in the version you can license now.

LYRICS: Prince, "Sign O' the Times"
SONG: My fave band Queen of Jeans has a soaring new single, with the two-guitar power-pop sound I love, topped by Miriam Devora's impassioned yet tuneful wail (listen at 1:16) and some sneaky songcraft (check the F chord at 1:54). Just the best.

SONG: From a mix Eric Ting created and shared a decade ago, this gorgeously layered hip-hop track by a group called Blue Belt just came up on my shuffle. Apart from this link, I see nothing online about Blue Belt or these amazing samples...leads welcome.
LYRICS: David Bowie, "Candidate"
SONG: It probably shouldn't be a surprise, given that it's a song about a fleeting yet timeless moment of connection, that it found its ideal form in a deceptively breezy, shatteringly moving live rendition by Bud & Travis. (h/t Cinco Paul)
LYRICS: Dolly Parton, "Hello God"
SONG: This version of a great CCM ballad, recorded around the time she was ready to transition from Leslie to Sam Phillips, has been a staple of the Greenpoint Reformed Church band repertoire for more than 15 years now. It never gets old.
