Music Dairy, Vol. 102 (Lyrics Only Edition)
Week of Dec. 15-21, 2025
This was the week that finally broke the streak I began in April 2022 by sharing a #dailylyric and #dailysong on social media (I added a #dailyalbum share starting in January 2023). I've listened to so much great stuff I might not otherwise have, so I have no regrets. But while I'm still posting daily lyrics on Facebook and Instagram, I can't keep up with sharing daily songs and albums. So I'll probably keep up this record of lyrics I've shared during the week. With a difference: I'll share the lyrics here, as Hrishikesh Hirway would say, in their entirety. (And there's still a playlist of the songs embedded above.)
1.
Hey
Haven’t heard from you in a couple of months
But I’m out right now and I’m all fucked up
And you’re callin’ my phone, you’re all alone
And I’m sensing some undertone
And I’m right here with all my friends
But you’re sending me your new address
And I know we’re done, I know we’re through
But, God, when I look at you
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts (I cannot hear my thoughts)
Like blah-blah-blah (Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
Should probably not
I should probably, probably not
I should probably, probably not
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
Fuck it, it’s fine
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
The biggest lie I ever said
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
I just tripped and fell into his bed
Now I’m gettin’ in the car, wreckin’ all my plans
I know I should stop, but I can’t
And I told my friends I was asleep
But I never said where or in whose sheets
And I pull up to your place on the second floor
And you’re standing, smiling at the door
And I’m sure I’ve seen much hotter men
But I really can’t remember when
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts (I cannot hear my thoughts)
Like blah-blah-blah (Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)
Should probably not
I should probably, probably not
I should probably, probably not
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
It’s a bad idea, right?
Seeing you tonight
Fuck it, it’s fine
Yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
The biggest lie I ever said
Oh, yes, I know that he’s my ex
But can’t two people reconnect?
I only see him as a friend
I just tripped and fell into his bed
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
The biggest lie I ever said
My brain goes, “Ah”
Can’t hear my thoughts
I just tripped and fell into his bed

Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
It’s a breath you took too late
It’s a death that’s worse than fate
Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
Though it may be secondhand
It’s by no means second-rate
I want your neck
I want the seat that you sit at
I want your check
Because they told me I would get on
I wanna chop off your head
And watch it roll into the basket
If you should drop dead tonight
Then they won’t have to ask me twice
Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
It’s a breath you took too late
It’s a death that’s worse than fate
Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
Though it may be secondhand
It’s by no means second-rate
They took me in the office and they told me very carefully
The way that I could benefit from death and disability
Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
It’s a breath you took too late
It’s a death that’s worse than fate
Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
Though it may be secondhand
It’s by no means second-rate
I want your company car
I want your girlfriend and love
I want your place at the bar
Because there’s always another man
To chop off your head
And watch it roll into the basket
And if you should drop dead tonight
Then they won’t have to ask me twice
Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
It’s a breath you took too late
It’s a death that’s worse than fate
Senior service
Junior dissatisfaction
Though it may be secondhand
It’s by no means second-rate

She can have she
Like her birthday, sooth
To sing swan song
She gave her cold hand to he
Who’d been just
A drunken hot ghost
She’s sucking up again
But happy
As the day is long
She can have she
Like her birthday, sooth
To sing swan song
She can have she
Like her birthday, sooth
To sing swan song
She gave her cold hand to he
Who’d been just
A drunken hot ghost
She’s sucking up again
But happy
As the day is long
She can have she
Like her birthday, sooth
To sing swan song
She can have she
Like her birthday, sooth
To sing swan song
She gave her cold hand to he
Who’d been just
A drunken hot ghost
She’s sucking up again
But happy
As the day is long
She can have she
Like her birthday, sooth
To sing swan song

There’s a crow flying
Black and ragged
Tree to tree
He’s black as the highway that’s leading me
Now he’s diving down
To pick up on something shiny
I feel like that black crow
Flying
In a blue sky
I took a ferry to the highway
Then I drove to a pontoon plane
I took a plane to a taxi
And a taxi to a train
I’ve been traveling so long
How’m I ever going to know my home
When I see it again?
I’m like a black crow flying
In a blue, blue sky
In search of love and music
My whole life has been
Illumination
Corruption
And diving diving diving diving
Diving down to pick up on every shiny thing
Just like that black crow flying
In a blue sky
I looked at the morning
After being up all night
I looked at my haggard face in the bathroom light
I looked out the window
And I saw that ragged soul take flight
I saw a black crow flying
In a blue sky
Oh, I’m like a black crow flying
In a blue sky
Joni Mitchell, “Black Crow”
5.
Sister bluebird
Flying high above
Shine your wings
Forward to the sun
Hide the myst’ries
Of life on your way
Though you’ve seen them
Please don’t say a word
What you don’t know
I have never heard
Starship trooper
Go sailing on by
Catch my soul
Catch the very light
Hide the moment
From my eager eye
Though you’ve seen there
Please don’t tell a soul
What you can’t see
Can’t be very whole
Speak to me of summer
Long winters longer than time can remember
The setting up of other roads
To travel on in old accustomed ways
I still remember the talks by the water
The proud sons and daughter
That knew the knowledge of the land
Spoke to me in sweet accustomed ways
Mother life
Hold firmly on to me
Catch my knowledge
Higher than the day
Lose as much
As only you can show
Though you’ve seen me
Please don’t say a word
What I don’t know
I have never shared
Loneliness is a power that we
Possess to give
Or take away forever
All I know can be shown by your
Acceptance of the facts there
Shown before you
Take what I say in a different way
And it’s easy to say
That this is all confusion
As I see a new day in me
I can also show it you
And you may follow
Speak to me of summer
Long winters longer than time can remember
The setting up of other roads
To travel on in old accustomed ways
I still remember the talks by the water
The proud sons and daughter
That knew the knowledge of the land
Spoke to me in sweet accustomed ways

My phone’s on vibrate for you
Electroclash is karaoke too
I try to dance Britney Spears
I guess I’m getting on in years
My phone’s on vibrate for you
God knows what all these new drugs do
I guess to have no more fears
But still I always end up in tears
My phone’s on vibrate for you
But still I never ever feel from you
Pinocchio’s now a boy
Who wants to turn back into a toy
So call me
Call me in the morning
Call me in the night
So call me
Call me anytime you like
My phone’s on vibrate
For you
For you
Rufus Wainwright, “Vibrate”

GUITEAU: I am going to the Lordy
I am so glad
I am going to the Lordy
I am so glad
I am going to the Lordy
Glory hallelujah!
Glory hallelujah!
I am going to the Lordy…
BALLADEER: Come, all ye Christians
And learn from a sinner:
Charlie Guiteau
Bound and determined he’d wind up a winner
Charlie had dreams that he wouldn’t let go
Said, “Nothin’ to it
I want it, I’ll do it
I’m Charles J. Guiteau!”
Charlie Guiteau
Never said “never” or heard the word “no”
Faced with disaster
His heart would beat faster
His smile would just grow
And he’d say:
GUITEAU: Look on the bright side
Look on the bright side
Sit on the right side
Of the Lord!
This is the land of
Opportunity
He is your lightning
You His sword
Wait till you see tomorrow
Tomorrow you’ll get your reward!
You can be sad
Or you can be President!
Look on the bright side...
I am going to the Lordy...
BALLADEER: Charlie Guiteau drew a crowd to his trial
Led them in prayer
Said, “I killed Garfield; I’ll make no denial
I was just acting for Someone up there
The Lord’s my employer
And now He’s my lawyer
So do what you dare!”
Charlie said, “Hell
If I am guilty, then God is as well!”
But God was acquitted
And Charlie committed
Until he should hang
Still, he sang:
GUITEAU: Look on the bright side
Not on the black side
Get off your backside
Shine those shoes!
This is your golden opportunity
You are the lightning
And you’re news!
Wait till you see tomorrow
Tomorrow you won’t be ignored!
You could be pardoned
You could be President!
Look on the bright side...
I am going to the Lordy...
BALLADEER: Charlie Guiteau had a crowd at the scaffold
GUITEAU: I am so glad...
BALLADEER: Filled up the square
So many people that tickets were raffled
Shine on his shoes, Charlie mounted the stair
Said, “Never sorrow
Just wait till tomorrow
Today isn’t fair
Don’t despair”
GUITEAU: Look on the bright side
Look on the bright side
Sit on the right side of the—
I am going to the Lordy
I am so glad!
I am going to the Lordy
I am so glad!
I have unified my party!
I have saved my country!
I shall be remembered!
I am going to the Lordy
BALLADEER: Look on the bright side
Not on the sad side
Inside the bad side
Something’s good!
This is your golden opportunity
You've been a preacher
GUITEAU: Yes, I have!
BALLADEER: You’ve been an author
GUITEAU: Yes, I have!
BALLADEER: You’ve been a killer
GUITEAU: Yes, I have!
BALLADEER: You could be an angel
GUITEAU: Yes, I could!
BALLADEER: Wait until tomorrow
Tomorrow they’ll all climb aboard!
What if you never
Got to be President?
You'll be remembered
GUITEAU & BALLADEER: Look on the bright side
Trust in tomorrow
And the Lord!
(Sound of hanging)
Jonathan Hadary and Patrick Cassidy (Sondheim), “The Ballad of Guiteau”
